Do you have a Terrace? Garden? Let’s get outside and do some Yoga!
So as the weather is starting to warm up over recent weeks I have been very fortunate to do outside yoga with a client of mine.
The outdoors is fantastic for doing Yoga. Regardless of the Yoga you are doing.
The particular client has a gorgeous field as a garden and there are trees and open fields beyond.
It’s a gorgeous, peaceful place to do some much needed ‘stop’ time.
To practice the breath.
To awaken the senses.
To be still.
To gently stretch.
To connect the body and mind.
To be thankful and grateful.
To feel the sun on your face.
To hear the birds and the wind rustling gently.
To smell the grass and the ‘clean’ air.
To connect to your mat and ground yourself as close to nature as possible.
The uneven floor is a great reminder that we can’t always be stood on a flat surface. And life often feels like that. We are not in control and we have to accept and be grateful that we have something to stand on. So the one leg balances on a garden are a little bit more difficult and challenging. It helps to bring acceptance and focus as there is more of a connection with your body to keep the posture. However, as with all Yoga postures there are adaptations that can help you gain confidence and achieve what you need.
Whilst outside I often include what I have at my disposal to help with the lesson.
Over recent weeks my client and I have used items outside as impromptu props. Such as a garden post to help with the one leg balance and to gain confidence until we trust the uneven ground below our feet. But also a tree stump – it isn’t always necessary to go on to our hands and knees to achieve a perfect ‘Downward Dog’ or Sanskrit name: Adho mukha svanasana. There are many things we can do complete ‘Yoga’.
So how can doing it outside help? Easy. There are many benefits to being outside.
In brief:
Better breathing
Improved sleep
Reduced symptoms of depression
More motivation (to exercise)
Mental restoration
Boosts immune function/system
Protection from short sightedness
Improved emotional wellbeing
